Timeline

Early Years

June 25, 1961: I was born in Walnut Creek, California to Annie (nee Moss) and Arvil Hancock. Annie was originally from Meridian, Mississippi, and Arvil from Rensselaer, Indiana. I also have a younger brother, Andy, born in 1963. Raised in Pacheco until the age of 8, I attended Pacheco Elementary School through 3rd grade. In 1970 the family moved to Torrance in southern Cailfornia, then Redondo Beach soon after where we remained until 1975. During this time I took guitar lessons from the age of 8, starting on American folk standards, then moving on to Beatles and other 60's rock songs a year later. In 6th grade I wanted to play in the school band, but since there was no place for a guitarist in band, I took up drums instead.

In 1975 the family moved back to the Bay Area in Sunnyvale, where they remain to this day. During this time I kept up on drums, playing in the marching band all 4 years at Fremont High School, but also kept playing guitar. I jammed with various friends before forming a dedicated rock band, Tempest, during my senior year, as a guitarist. Playing songs by Kansas, Van Halen, AC-DC and Aerosmith, we played various parties as well as in the rally court at school. I left this band a few months later to focus on progressive rock.

Graduating high school in 1979, I then studied electronics for one year at Foothill College before changing majors to Music, with a concentration on classical guitar. Not being much of a fan of Spanish music, which dominated the classical guitar repertoire, I learned mostly Renaissance lute pieces instead. After graduating with an AA degree, I transferred to San Jose State University to continue classical guitar, graduating with a BA degree in 1985.

After leaving my high school band Tempest, I went on to form several bands throughout the 80's and 90's. Finally in 1999 my last band broke up, I married my sweetheart Kaitlyn in 2000, and in 2001 we relocated from Los Angeles to the Santa Cruz Mountains, where I continue to write as a solo artist. You can read about each one of my former bands in the BANDS page of this website.
