Dreamhouse (1987-1992)
Though Mike Thompson and I splintered off into The Other in 1987, I continued jamming with my buddies Conor Maguire and Scott Webster, on a very loose, casual basis. We weren’t out necessarily to form a serious band, it was really just an excuse for us to party and jam. We did this off and on between 1987 and 1992. In retrospect this was one of my favorite bands, probably because it was based more off of friendship than a dedicated drive to go pro. However, the casual jamming got old and eventually Conor and I wanted to do something more serious with it. Scott, though a hell of a nice guy, was sometimes hard to nail down and we were never sure if he was going to show up for rehearsals. That left most of the song-writing to Conor and I. Conor’s influences were more along the lines of Tom Petty and REM, while I was getting into the jangly styles of U2, The Sundays, Cocteau Twins, Lloyd Cole and Lava Hay. We did a 4-song demo using the Tascam 4-track cassette deck, then later some live recordings using a new Tascam 8-track reel-to-reel recorder I bought. We never did a gig, other than a couple parties, because we never felt comfortable with our vocal abilities, and never found a singer to step in. Unfortunately, the more serious we got about the band the more I began to cave-in under the pressure of being in two bands at once. By this time The Other was in full swing and I didn’t feel I could give each band the attention and song-writing they needed simultaneously. Finally I opted out. Conor went on to join a band called Jon Ivory Journal, which recorded a 4-song demo in my garage with me co-producing and engineering. After that Conor moved to Mendocino. I moved to LA with Sherri and we lost contact for nearly 12 years.
